Conversation

Part 1

Examiner

Do you like reading?

Candidate

Yes, answer is positive. I really like reading books. I enjoy reading newspapers, magazines, books, articles in social media. Right now I am reading one of my favorite psychological book called Billy Milligan, which is very interesting for me. When I am reading, I feel more relaxed and the environment around me is very calm and sophisticated during this process.

Examiner

Do you prefer to read on paper or on a screen?

Candidate

It depends on the situation. If I want to be in a calm and relaxed and sophisticated environment, I would like to choose paper book because I can feel it and smell it. But if I want to find some information very quickly, I would like to read by screen method because I can find out information very easy using system control plus F.

Examiner

When do you need to read carefully, and when not?

Candidate

It's different on the situation. For example, when I am working on some kind of contract, I always read the whole information very carefully. And also I'm reading very carefully when I am doing my exams. Uh, but if I'm just scrolling social media, I use scheming method and I only uh, read headlines just and uh, understand general information.

Examiner

Do you prefer scanning or detailed reading?

Candidate

It depends on the situation. If I read some beautiful novel, for example about love story, I would like to read everything very carefully. But if I am doing my IELTS examination in the situation I would like to use scanning and scheming methods because I want to find information work quickly.

Evaluation

Overall

Overall: 6.0Fluency & Coherence: 6.0Pronunciation: 6.0Grammar: 6.0Lexical Resource: 6.0

Part 1

Do you like reading?

Score: 78.0

Suggestion: Be more concise and natural: start with a clear topic sentence, avoid repetition, correct minor grammatical errors, and limit to around 3–4 sentences. Add one specific reason or example to support your opinion and use linking words to improve coherence.

Example: Yes, I enjoy reading. I read newspapers and magazines for current events, and novels or psychology books like Billy Milligan for deeper insight. Reading relaxes me because it helps me escape daily stress and concentrate, especially when I read in a quiet, cozy place.

Do you prefer to read on paper or on a screen?

Score: 82.0

Suggestion: Improve fluency and natural phrasing: combine ideas to avoid repetition, use correct collocations (e.g., “paper books” not “paper book”), and replace literal descriptions ("system control plus F") with natural language ("Ctrl+F"). Keep it within 3–4 sentences.

Example: It depends. For leisure reading I prefer paper books because I like the feel and smell of them and they help me relax. However, for quick searches or research I prefer reading on a screen since I can use tools like Ctrl+F to find information fast.

When do you need to read carefully, and when not?

Score: 74.0

Suggestion: Reduce hesitation and correct vocabulary: avoid filler words (uh), use correct terms (“skimming” not “scheming”), and make sentences more concise. Provide a clear contrast with linking words like “but” or “however.”

Example: It depends on the context. For important documents such as contracts or when I study for exams, I read very carefully to avoid mistakes. However, when browsing social media I usually skim headlines to get the general idea quickly.

Do you prefer scanning or detailed reading?

Score: 76.0

Suggestion: Use correct terms and smooth linking: replace “scheming” with “skimming,” fix small grammar issues, and avoid repetition. Provide one clear example for each mode and link them with “for example” or “on the other hand.”

Example: It depends on my purpose. For novels, such as a love story, I prefer detailed reading to appreciate the language and emotions. On the other hand, during exams like IELTS I use scanning and skimming to locate answers quickly.

Grammar

Present tense issue

× I really like reading books.

I really like reading books.

No change needed; sentence correctly uses present simple to express general preference.

Incorrect use of prepositions

× I enjoy reading newspapers, magazines, books, articles in social media.

I enjoy reading newspapers, magazines, books, and articles on social media.

Use the preposition 'on' with 'social media' and include 'and' before the final item in a list for standard coordination. Also add commas for clarity.

Incorrect use of articles

× Right now I am reading one of my favorite psychological book called Billy Milligan, which is very interesting for me.

Right now I am reading one of my favorite psychology books, called Billy Milligan, which I find very interesting.

Use the plural 'books' after 'one of my favorite' and the noun form 'psychology' as the adjective. Add a comma before 'called' and change 'for me' to 'I find' to sound natural.

Present tense issue

× When I am reading, I feel more relaxed and the environment around me is very calm and sophisticated during this process.

When I read, I feel more relaxed and the environment around me is calm and pleasant during the process.

Use simple present 'read' for habitual actions. 'Sophisticated' is not the best collocation for describing a calm atmosphere; 'pleasant' is clearer. Remove redundant 'very' and 'this' to improve flow.

Article errors

× If I want to be in a calm and relaxed and sophisticated environment, I would like to choose paper book because I can feel it and smell it.

If I want to be in a calm, relaxed, and pleasant environment, I would choose a paper book because I can feel and smell it.

Use articles correctly: 'a paper book' (or better 'a physical book'). Use commas to separate adjectives. 'Would choose' is preferable for conditional preference; remove redundant 'it' after 'feel'.

Incorrect use of prepositions

× But if I want to find some information very quickly, I would like to read by screen method because I can find out information very easy using system control plus F.

But if I want to find information very quickly, I prefer to read on a screen because I can find information easily using Ctrl+F.

Use 'on a screen' rather than 'by screen method'. 'Prefer' is more natural than 'would like to' for habitual choice. Use 'easily' (adverb) not 'easy', and 'Ctrl+F' is the common term for the shortcut.

Incorrect use of articles

× It's different on the situation.

It depends on the situation.

The correct phrase is 'depends on the situation'. 'Different on the situation' is unidiomatic.

Present tense issue

× For example, when I am working on some kind of contract, I always read the whole information very carefully.

For example, when I work on a contract, I always read all the information very carefully.

Use simple present 'work' for habitual actions. 'All the information' is more natural than 'the whole information'.

Present tense issue

× And also I'm reading very carefully when I am doing my exams.

I also read very carefully when I take exams.

Use simple present 'read' and 'take' for habitual exam behavior; avoid continuous forms here. 'I also' is more natural than 'And also' at the sentence start.

Incorrect use of vocabulary/word choice

× Uh, but if I'm just scrolling social media, I use scheming method and I only uh, read headlines just and uh, understand general information.

But if I'm just scrolling social media, I use skimming and only read headlines to get general information.

The correct term is 'skimming' not 'scheming'. Remove filler words 'uh' and 'just' redundancy. Use 'to get' to express purpose.

Sentence structure errors

× If I read some beautiful novel, for example about love story, I would like to read everything very carefully.

If I read a beautiful novel, for example a love story, I like to read everything very carefully.

Use 'a novel' and 'a love story' with articles. For habitual preference use 'I like to' or simple present rather than 'I would like to'. Adjust word order for clarity.

Incorrect use of articles

× But if I am doing my IELTS examination in the situation I would like to use scanning and scheming methods because I want to find information work quickly.

But if I'm taking my IELTS exam, I would use scanning and skimming methods because I want to find information quickly.

Use 'taking my IELTS exam' for natural phrasing. Correct 'scheming' to 'skimming'. Remove extraneous 'work' and use adverb 'quickly'.
